Spanish poetry meets Italian music.
From the sensitivity of two great composers comes Platero y Yo, a work for narrator and guitar — the centerpiece of Matinée’s October concert.

★ SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER 11 AM
★ MATINÉE | BETWEEN MUSIC AND POETRY
ROXANA MORCOSANU | Narrator and guitar
“Platero y Yo” by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco

The pieces performed by Roxana Morcosanu during the Matinée concert include ten scenes from the work composed by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco in 1960.
Linked together by a chronological thread of action, they are distinguished by the natural way in which the guitar blends into the fabric of the masterpiece—preparing, emphasizing, and accompanying the expressions and imagery of the text.

PLATERO Y YO | Juan Ramón Jiménez (1914)

The cycle of short poems tells the story of the friendship between a little donkey and the poet, and how, through the donkey, the poet enters the world of nature and its mystery. Through illusions and certainties, the poet is led to the places where the mystery of life comes together again, and, starting from himself, to the understanding of human nature itself.
Poetry thus becomes a quest for wisdom — one that finds its center in a serene acceptance of life, recognizing pain and death as an integral part of it.

Considered one of the pinnacles of early 20th-century Spanish poetry, Platero y Yo earned the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956.

Drawing inspiration from 28 of the 138 scenes of Jiménez’s poem, Castelnuovo-Tedesco created one of the most original works in the guitar repertoire: a melologue, in which the music is not merely descriptive but helps to create another poetic language and another level of listening.
The spoken part includes short sung passages — melodies that take us back to the roots of Spanish folk song and to the style of the French ariette.
